Trees are a witch’s best friend
It’s the last day of September. We are about to jump into the Samhain season, the dark journey of Persephone to the underworld, the invitation to liminal living.
I love the darker months of the wheel.
As we prepare to traverse the inner landscapes of ourselves while nestled in, it's a great time for a witch to find a tree ally to walk the next space of time with.
Here me out on this one...
In order to drive a straight line on a tractor (to put in those lovely straight lines of crops), I have to pick a fixed point on the horizon and drive towards that. If I don't, and I just look directly in front of me, the beds will be crooked as all get out.
As we traverse the darker months and the inner worlds, having a fixed point reference can keep us grounded.
There's no better fixed point I can think of than a tree!
TRY THIS:
Find a tree in your yard, neighborhood or park. Find one that you can visit when you need a steadying force and one that you can access for hangouts. (After all, a friend who only shows up when in need, is a rainy-day friend indeed!)
I like to ask if they would like to be friends and listen for the answer? This can come in the form of a knowing, a feeling of acceptance or comfort, a sign, or even mental pictures or words. Sometimes they call to me on a walk as I set my intention to befriend a tree.
I like to spend time with my plant allies feeling their energy and just being together. I also like to ask them, "How can I honor you?"
I place my hands on the tree and sometimes place my back against it.
Time together grows a relationship. Check out it's roots, leaves, bark, branching style, animal interaction, and whatever else you feel called to notice.
I have found that the steady energy of trees brings me back to myself. I am grounded in their presence.
As time progresses, getting to know your tree develops so much more than what your physical senses can learn. No screen will ever convey what a tree does!
There is a quietude and steadiness that trees lend to your consciousness. In tough times I visit my favorite trees and they still my nervous system, realigning my understanding of myself in relationship to the world.
All of this is done through a magick that transcends words. The secrets whispered to your soul by trees are priceless. Spending time with trees changes your BEing.
A tree that is a friend will hold your heart.
A tree that is a friend will teach you the mysteries of trust, cooperation, reciprocation, and how to change with grace, accepting the flow of the YOUniverse.
The generosity of spirit that a tree exudes is humbling.
The lessons of trees are given from their very being, with a selfless abandon that brings me such peace…
…. when I take the time to listen.
In the coming months, and even years, the wisdom and deep abiding that a tree provides can be the steady point on the horizon to fly your broom towards.
So find a tree and make a friend.
A witch needs a friendship as magical as a tree provides!
